New York City has opened applications for its Section 8 Project-Based Voucher waitlist, giving low- and moderate-income residents an opportunity to receive help paying their rent.

- Application Deadline: July 24 at 5:00 p.m.
- What's Available: Vouchers are open for apartments across all five NYC boroughs, ranging from studio apartments to five-bedroom units.
- How It Works: Placements on the waiting list will be decided by a random drawing. Being selected for the waitlist does not guarantee you will get an apartment or a voucher immediately.
How the Subsidy Works
The Section 8 Project-Based Voucher program helps cover housing costs:
- Renter's Share: Tenants usually pay 30% of their adjusted monthly income toward rent.
- Program Share: The New York State Homes and Community Renewal program pays the remaining rent directly to the landlord.
Who Is Eligible?
To apply for the program, applicants must meet the following basic requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Immigration Status: At least one member of the household must be a U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident, or have another eligible immigration status.
- Income: Eligibility depends on household size and total gross annual income.
